Team India opener Abhishek Sharma continued his dismal start to international cricket in the second ODI against South Africa in Gqeberha on November 10. The 24-year-old struck an authoritative boundary off Gerald Coetzee to get off the mark before falling to the same bowler in the same over.
Abhishek top-edged a short ball and found the fielder at the short fine-leg region to be dismissed for a five-ball four. The southpaw has seen a massive drop off in his returns since the century against Zimbabwe in the second T20I game of his career.
Since that three-figure score, Abhishek has gone seven innings without crossing 20 once and averages a paltry 10 in this stretch.
While the southpaw thrilled fans with his sensational starts in IPL 2024, his diminishing returns in international cricket had fans on Twitter fuming with the following reactions:
Fans continued slamming Abhishek for another poor showing with one saying:
"Abhishek Sharma has become a walking wicket. He needs to work on his short ball game. btw, he reminds you of someone."
"Abhishek Sharma bro, it's the home ground of Sunrisers Eastern Cape, not sunrisers Hyd. You can't go from ball 1 in all matches, and especially when u finding form. Should spend some time at the crease. Who's going to talk to him? Blind Slogging in all games," tweeted a fan.
"Maybe Yuvraj Singh needs to give him Yograj Singh treatment!! Flop show by Abhishek Sharma!" a fan said.
Abhishek Sharma's departure puts India in deep trouble in the 2nd South Africa T20I
Abhishek Sharma was the second wicket to fall in the Indian innings after South Africa won the toss and elected to field again in the second T20I. The Proteas immediately removed the centurion from the series opener, Sanju Samson in the first over for a three-ball duck.
Abhishek's departure in the following over saw India slip to 5/2 with the hosts right on top. Things went from bad to worse when the Indian skipper Suryakumar Yadav was trapped LBW for four off nine deliveries to leave the side reeling at 15/3 in four overs.
Just when a partnership started flourishing between Axar Patel and Tilak Varma for the fourth wicket, the latter fell courtesy a brilliant catch from David Miller. The fortunes contined to head South Africa's way when Axar was dismissed run-out at the bowler's end for 27 to leave the visitors stubmling at 70/5 in the 12th over.
T20 star Rinku Singh has joined Hardik Pandya with India in desperate need of resurrection to their innings.
