The International Cricket Council (ICC) have announced sanctions for Mohammed Siraj and Travis Head after their involvement in a verbal spat during the second Test in Adelaide. Both have received one demerit point, while Siraj has copped a 20 per cent fine of his match fee.
The incident occurred on Day 2 of the pink-ball Test as Siraj got the better of the southpaw by cleaning him up for 140. With Head smashing the right-arm pacer for a four and a six earlier in the over, the Hyderabad-born cricketer was fired up and gave him a fiery send-off. According to the Indian speedster, the 30-year-old abused him but the Aussie batter denied it.
Siraj was fined according to Article 2.5 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel which states:
“Using language, actions or gestures which disparage or which could provoke an aggressive reaction from a batter upon dismissal."
As per ICC, the left-hander had breached Article 2.13 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which relates to the:
“Abuse of a player, player support personnel, umpire or match referee during an international match.”
It was also the first demerit point for both, making it their first offense in 24 months. The pair also admitted to their offenses.
Travis Head earned the Player of the Match award
Meanwhile, the South Australian's 140 proved to be the most decisive factor in the hosts' 10-wicket win in Adelaide. The southpaw's innings helped them gain a 157-run lead.
Coming in to bat at 103-3, the southpaw was aggressive from the get go, smashing 17 fours and four sixes in his innings of 140. This was his eighth Test century and his third overall century against India in all formats.
Australia and India will resume their rivalry in the third Test, beginning on December 14 in Brisbane.
