Rohit played for the Deccan Chargers in the first three seasons of the IPL, scoring 1,170 runs in 45 matches. On January 8, 2011, during the IPL auction, the Mumbai Indians acquired him for ₹9.2 crore. Since then, Rohit has been instrumental in reshaping the franchise's success and has played a key role in its transformation.

Rohit took over as captain of the Mumbai Indians just six games into the 2013 season and immediately made his mark, leading the team to their first IPL title. That same year, Mumbai also triumphed in the Champions League T20, completing a remarkable double.

The 37-year-old continued to steer the team to success. He guided them to IPL victories in 2015, 2017, 2019, and 2020, cementing the Mumbai Indians as one of the most successful franchises alongside the Chennai Super Kings, with five titles.
