Former Indian opener Sunil Gavaskar is unsure of the futures of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma after their poor outings in the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) 2024-25 series against Australia. The 75-year-old said the two senior players have not contributed as per expectations and that all they had to do in Melbourne was draw the game.

Kohli and Rohit have struggled throughout the series, leaving the tourists 2-1 down in the rubber, with one game to go. While Kohli has scored a hundred in this series, the Indian skipper has yet to score a fifty. Rohit has conjured only 31 runs in three Tests, averaging a woeful 6.20.

Speaking to India Today, here's what Gavaskar said about the futures of Team India's stalwarts:

"It actually all depends on the selectors. I'm not a good reader of the crystal ball, because in Indian cricket, nobody can read a crystal ball. That is a fact. But the contributions which were expected have not come. I don't think it's a lower order problem. It's the top order that has to contribute. So, I mean, the seniors have not really made the contribution that they should have and all that they had to do was to bat out today and live to fight another day in Sydney."

The tourists slipped to 33/3 in the pre-lunch session on the final day of the Boxing Day Test, with Australia setting a target of 340. Although the hosts went wicketless in the second session, they roared back to take the remaining seven after Tea to win by 184 runs.

"The foot is going straight down the pitch" - Sunil Gavaskar on Virat Kohli's barren run

With Virat Kohli continuously getting out to deliveries by fiddling at them outside off-stump, Gavaskar has observed zero or no foot movement from the legendary batter. The 105-Test veteran said (via The Indian Express):

"The (Kohli’s) foot is not going to the pitch of the ball, the foot is going straight down the pitch, not towards the ball. If the foot goes more towards the ball, you have more chances of hitting the ball from the middle. Because the foot is not moving, you end up reaching for the ball and that is what has been happening."

India and Australia will compete in the final Test in Sydney, beginning on January 3.
