Only one Indian cricketer in Jasprit Bumrah has made the shortlist for the Sir Garfield Sobers Trophy for ICC Men's Cricketer of the Year 2024. Four players have been shortlisted for the award.
Apart from Indian pacer Jasprit Bumrah, the English batting duo of Joe Root and Harry Brook have made it to the nominations. Australian batter Travis Head is also on the list.
Joe Root finished the calendar year with over 1000 Test runs, doing so for the fifth time in his career. This year, he amassed 1556 runs from 17 Tests, averaging 55.57 with a top score of 262. He is also the highest run-getter in the format this year, scoring six hundreds and five half-centuries.
His teammate Harry Brook established himself in the longest format, showcasing his abilities with the bat in red-ball cricket. Brook is the fourth-highest run-scorer in Tests this year with 1100 runs from 12 Tests with an average of 55 and a best score of 317.
Meanwhile, Travis Head, who has proven to be a headache for most teams and India in particular, had an exceptional year in both Tests and T20Is. He has ended the year with 608 runs from nine Tests at an average of 40.53 and a high score of 152. In T20Is, he piled on 539 runs from 15 games with an impressive strike-rate of 178.47.
Indian pacer Jasprit Bumrah's incredible display in 2024 sets him apart
Jasprit Bumrah ended the year as the leading wicket-taker in Tests with 71 scalps from 13 matches at an average of 14.92. He is also fifth on the list of the most wickets in Tests by an Indian bowler in a calendar year. The pacer also became the fastest Indian bowler to pick up 200 Test wickets.
Bumrah grabbed 15 wickets from eight T20Is this year at an average of 8.26 and an economy rate of 4.17. All of his wickets came during India's title-winning 2024 T20 World Cup campaign. He was also named the 'Player of the Tournament.' Bumrah has also been nominated for the ICC Men's Test Cricketer of the Year 2024.
