Pakistan continued their dismal run in the shortest format, losing the second T20I to South Africa by seven wickets at Centurion on Friday, December 13. After this, cricket fans from the rest of the world poked fun at them online. After falling short in a run-chase in the series opener, the Men in Green opted to bat first in the second T20I.
The move worked wonders as Pakistan smashed a massive 206/5 in their 20 overs, with opener Saim Ayub's 57-ball 98* leading the way. However, the bowlers let Pakistan down as the Proteas completed a thrilling chase with three balls and seven wickets remaining.
Reeza Hendricks brought up his maiden T20I ton, finishing with 117* off 63 balls as South Africa took an unassailable 2-0 lead in the best-of-three series. Speedster Haris Rauf took a hammering from the host batters, conceding 57 runs in his four overs, while Abbas Afridi wasn't much better with figures of 1/46 in 3.3 overs.
It was Pakistan's third bilateral T20I series defeat in their last four series, with the lone win coming against a lowly Zimbabwe side.
Pakistan also suffered a first-round exit in the 2024 T20 World Cup in the West Indies and USA.
Fans on X/Twitter were seemingly in great spirits, trolling Pakistan for another T20I series defeat with the following reactions:
Fans continued trolling the Pakistan team, with one saying:
"But that said, need players like Saim, Niazi, Qasim, Sadaqat, Haider in the team to compete in 2026 T20. Get rid of the useless PR promoted players."
"Keep hearing Rizwan is a genius captain. Why didn’t he think to give Saim Ayub even one over today? Another series loss for him," tweeted a fan.
"Defeating South Africa in South Africa is not as easy as your Father made it @TheRealPCB," a fan said.
"After 10 overs, we lost our way" - Mohommad Rizwan after Pakistan lost 2nd T20I to SA
Pakistan skipper Mohammad Rizwan blamed the side's disappointing defeat in the second T20I on the middle-order batting.
The visitors coasted to 100/1 in 10.3 overs, yet, scored only 50 runs off the next 37 deliveries. Despite crossing the 200-run mark, Rizwan felt Pakistan were a few runs short after the blistering start.
He said at the post-match presentation (via Cricbuzz):
"Saim Ayub was exceptional, after 10 overs we lost our way, the middle-order is in a learning process, we have an inexperienced side, we were looking at 220-plus but 4 overs they bowled really well. We have another match and still we love cricket and would look forward to play tomorrow."
Pakistan will look to avoid a series whitewash in the final T20I at Johannesburg on Saturday, December 14.
