Former Australia captain Mark Taylor has offered his take on Yashasvi Jaiswal's contentious dismissal on Day 5 of the fourth Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) 2024-25 Test against India in Melbourne. Taylor opined that people finding controversy are looking for it and asserted that Australia genuinely took all 10 wickets to win the contest.
With Jaiswal looking solid and keeping India on track to draw the game amid wickets falling from the other end, Pat Cummins provided the breakthrough. The Aussie captain bowled a bouncer down the leg side as the left-hander went for the swivel pull but missed. Cummins took the review for caught behind as Snicko showed no movement. However, the third umpire overturned the on-field decision based on deflection, leaving the cricketing fraternity divided.
Speaking to Nine's Today Program, the ex-Australian opener said (via The Sydney Morning Herald):
"People who are finding controversy are looking for controversy. Australia took 10 genuine wickets yesterday and thoroughly deserve their win."
After the on-field umpire overturned the decision, the 23-year-old was seen arguing with them before walking back. BCCI vice-president Rajiv Shukla took to X to protest the third umpire's call, saying the decision should have been made based only on the technology.
"I think it was clear that he hit it" - Pat Cummins on Yashasvi Jaiswal's dismissal
At the post-match presser, Australian skipper Pat Cummins said Ultra-Edge is not completely reliable and was relieved to have enough evidence to reverse the decision. Cummins said (via The Sydney Morning Herald):
"I think it was clear that he hit it. Heard a noise, saw deviation, it was absolutely certain that he hit it. As soon as we referred it, you could see him [Jaiswal] clearly drop his head and basically acknowledge that he hit it. On the screen, you could see that he hit it. Ultra-edge, I don’t think anyone has complete confidence in. It didn’t really show much but, fortunately, there was enough other evidence to show that it was clearly out."
Australia and India will clash in the fifth and final Test in Sydney, with the hosts holding a 2-1 lead.
