Team India skipper Rohit Sharma has etched his name in ODI record book several times in his illastrious career. On this day in 2014, the 37-year-old did the impossible by becoming the first batter in ODI history to score over 250 in an innings.
Team India had already clinched the five-match home ODI series against Sri Lanka by winning the opening three games. However, the Men in Blue were not done anhilating the Lankans as they batted first and piled up a massive 404/5 in 50 overs.
Rohit finished on an incredible 264 off 173 deliveries, dethroning the then-record for the highest score in ODIs of 219 by Virender Sehwag. Yet, the innings wasn't always smooth sailing for champion opener as he reached his half-century off 72 balls.
But the acceleration started from that point on as he scored the next 214 runs off a mere 101 deliveries to thrill the Eden Gardens crowd. While it has been a decade since Rohit's record-breaking display, no batter even in this high-scoring era has come close to his 264.
Fans on Twitter went berserk in celebrating the Indian captain on the tenth anniversary of his memorable 264 against Sri Lanka with the following reactions:
Fans continued paying tribute to Rohit for his record performance with one saying:
"The game we love because of Rohit Sharma the Hitman .Greatest ever knock in ODI cricket."
"Breaking 264 isn't easy as Rohit made it look with his slow start," tweeted a fan.
"Raising your bat five times is a crazy record and no ifs or buts will ever convince me that this 264 by Rohit Sharma isn't the greatest ODI innings of all time. Happy 13th November to all those celebrating!" a fan said.
"I will try my best to get to 300, but as of now I will take 264" - Rohit Sharma
Rohit Sharma said after the game that his next goal would be to score an ODI triple century.
The 264 was Rohit's second double century in ODIs and he has since gone on to score another double ton against Sri Lanka in 2017. The veteran right-hander is the only cricketer in history to smash multiple ODI double centuries.
Rohit's 264 helped India pull off a convincing 153-run win and he said during the post-match presentation:
"The fact that I went on to bat 50 overs was absolutely pleasing. I have been working on it. To bat as long as possible. Finally I managed that. It's going to be difficult to pick out one shot that stands out. I really cannot pick out one. I will try my best to get to 300, but as of now I will take 264. A lot of memories at Eden Gardens that will remain close to me. This one was really special."
Rohit 33 boundaries were the most by a batter in an ODI and he also added nine maximums in his sensational showing.
