India captain Rohit Sharma failed to deliver with the bat again on Day 2 (Friday, December 27) of the fourth Test in Melbourne. The right-hander departed for just three runs off five balls before getting caught by Scott Boland at mid-on off his Aussie counterpart Pat Cummins.

The failure came even as Rohit returned to his opening spot, which forced in-form KL Rahul to play at No. 3. The 37-year-old batter previously returned with scores of 3 and 6 in Adelaide and 10 in Brisbane while playing at No. 6.

Rohit has been dismal with the bat in his last eight Tests, managing 155 runs in 14 innings at an average of 11.07, comprising one half-century.

Fans on X slammed the Indian skipper for his failures with the bat. One user wrote:

"Rohit Sharma You Either Die a Hero or Live Long Enough to See Yourself Become the Villain."

Another user wrote:

"Rohit Sharma please retire from test cricket. I'm a fan of yours but for me ICT comes first before any player."

A third user added:

"Rohit Sharma can retire from test this afternoon."

"His batting has been ordinary since the Test series against New Zealand" - Former India selector slams Rohit Sharma

Former India selector MSK Prasad slammed Rohit Sharma for his underwhelming numbers with the bat. Prasad said Rohit is nowhere near Virat Kohli and Ajinkya Rahane, who led from the front in the last two Test series Down Under when India won by the same 2-1 margins.

MSK Prasad told Star Sports (via Cricket Today):

“His batting has been ordinary since the Test series against New Zealand, and he landed in Australia with no form under his belt."
"If you look at the last two series we won in Australia, Virat Kohli led from the front on the first occasion. When we were bowled out for 36 in Adelaide in the last series, Ajinkya Rahane revived the team with a brilliant hundred at the Melbourne Cricket Ground," he added.
