Team India skipper Rohit Sharma's name was missing from the list of reserves that the visitors listed for the fifth Test of the Border Gavaskar Trophy. The Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) is hosting the New Year's Test, and the series is currently 2-1 in favor of Australia.
There was much speculation surrounding Rohit Sharma's place in the squad despite his being the skipper of the side. However, visuals of Jasprit Bumrah, vice-captain of the team, donning the captain's blazers put all doubts to rest, confirming that Rohit will not take part in the Test.
Jasprit Bumrah stated that Rohit Sharma had opted out of the contest, but his name doesn't feature in the list of five reserves named for this Test. The 38-year-old, along with Akash Deep, is one of the two names not to feature in the team sheet and also didn't feature alongside the team at the national anthem ceremony.
Take a look at the same below:
Team India's playing XI for the fifth Border Gavaskar Test: Yashasvi Jaiswal, KL Rahul, Shubhman Gill, Virat Kohli, Rishabh Pant (wk), Ravindra Jadeja, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Washington Sundar, Prasidh Krishna, Jasprit Bumrah (c), Mohammed Siraj
Rohit Sharma has only scored 31 runs in the three matches he played in the BGT 2024-25
Rohit Sharma's dismal form has been a matter of concern for India's backroom staff. After missing out on the first Test, Rohit was back in the side as the captain and batted at number six. However, returns of 3,6 and 10 saw him make a move back to the top of the order.
But the change didn't seem to have worked for him, with the 38-year-old recording scores of three and nine in the two innings of the MCG Test, which India lost by 184 runs. It will be interesting to see what call is taken regarding Rohit after this Test.
