Team India batter Shubman Gill failed to convert the start in the first innings of the fifth Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) 2024-25 Test at the Sydney Cricket Ground. He got out just at the stroke of lunch on Day 1 of the Test match.

After losing KL Rahul and Yashasvi Jaiswal in a span of few overs after India elected to bat first, Gill and Virat Kohli did the difficult job of getting their eyes in. The Aussie bowlers bowled some hard lines and lengths but Gill and Kohli were solid in their defenses and were slowly building a partnership.

When it seemed like both teams would share the session, a lapse in concentration gave the home side an advantage. India went to lunch on Day 1 in Sydney at 57/3.

Gill had negated Nathan Lyon until then, before charging down the track in the last ball of the over. As a result, he could only get the outside edge and Steve Smith completed an easy catch at slips.

Fans slammed Shubman Gill for giving away his wicket after doing all the hard work. They also drew references to incumbent skipper Rohit Sharma to take a jibe at the young batter. Incidentally, Gill replaced underfire Rohit in the playing XI for the Sydney Test.

Here are some reactions:

"Shubman Gill Out 20 run 63 balls Par jiske liye Rohit Sharma ke jagah khelaya gaya tha ab koi kuch nahi bolega Rohit Sharma hota to ab tak usko troll karne lagte," a fan wrote.
"Shubman Gill deserves like Rohit Sharma treatment. Still not understanding why fraud Gill in Indian cricket team across format," another fan said.
"Let's blame rohit sharma for shubman gill dismissal," wrote another fan.

How has Shubman Gill performed in BGT 2024-25?

The 25-year-old cricketer from Punjab missed the first BGT 2024-25 Test in Perth due to a finger injury. He returned to the playing XI for the day-night Test in Adelaide and scored 31 and 28 across two innings.

Gill had a poor outing at the Gabba, getting out for one before he was dropped for the Boxing Day Test to accommodate Rohit Sharma in the top order. Overall, he has accumulated 80 runs across four innings so far in the series.
