India head coach Gautam Gambhir was at the receiving end as the tourists lost the fifth Test in Sydney by six wickets to lose the series 1-3 in Australia. This was India's first Test series loss Down Under after the 2014-15 series.

Fans slammed the coach following India's second consecutive Test series defeat, having lost the previous series to New Zealand by a 0-3 margin at home. This was India's first Test series loss at home after 12 years.

With just one win in the last eight games, the Men in Blue were knocked out of the race to the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) 2025 final. India had earlier reached the first two WTC finals in 2021 and 2023 under Ravi Shastri and Rahul Dravid's coaching but lost to New Zealand and Australia, respectively. Under Gambhir's mentorship, however, India won the two-match Test series 2-0 against Bangladesh

Besides Tests, India also lost the ODI series 0-2 in Sri Lanka under his coaching. The Men in Blue, however, registered back-to-back T20I series clean sweeps over Bangladesh and Sri Lanka under Suryakumar Yadav's captaincy.

Fans on X slammed Gambhir following the Test series loss in Australia. One user wrote:

"It was better before Gautam Gambhir."

Another user wrote:

"Throw out Gautam Gambhir before he completely destroys the Indian team further. The scene where he was celebrating when India avoided the follow on sums up where he brought the team performance."

A third user added:

"Sack Gautam Gambhir."

"They'll decide what is best for Indian cricket" - Gautam Gambhir backs Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli despite BGT 2024-25 failures

Gautam Gambhir has backed under-fire India captain Rohit Sharma and senior batter Virat Kohli to decide their future in Tests despite failing in the Test series. The 43-year-old said in the post-match press conference (via PTI):

"They are tough people with hunger, they'll decide what is best for Indian cricket."

Rohit managed just 31 runs in five innings at an average of 6.2 in the series before he stood down for the fifth Test in Sydney.

On the other hand, Kohli managed just 90 runs in eight innings, barring his unbeaten 100 in Perth. He was dismissed while poking around the off-stump channel for the 8/8th time in the five-game series.
