Veteran Bangladesh all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan failed to prove the legality of his bowling action as he failed the reassessment test for the second time. He underwent the evaluation on December 21 at the Sri Ramachandra Centre for Sports Science in Chennai but remains suspended from bowling in all competitions after failing the test.

Shakib's bowling action first came under scrutiny during his county stint with Surrey in September 2024. He was initially banned from bowling in England Cricket Board-run cricket and failed the first test at Loughborough University as his elbow was found to exceed the 15-degree angle threshold.

"Consequently, the player's existing suspension from bowling in international cricket following the initial independent assessment at the testing centre of Loughborough University in the UK, also remains in place. A successful reassessment is required for the bowling suspension to be lifted. While Shakib is currently unable to bowl, he is eligible to continue playing as a batsman in all forms of domestic and international cricket," Bangladesh Cricket Board's statement read

Shakib Al Hasan's inability to bowl, and current status as a pure batter, jeopardizes his ambitions to be in the Bangladesh squad for the 2025 Champions Trophy. He is only active in ODI cricket as of now, and his inability to partake in the tournament will come across as a huge blow.

"If he (Shakib) is not bowling chances are slim (to play in the Champions Trophy)," member of the selection panel told Cricbuz
"Tamim is sorted (having announced retirement), and Shakib needs to come after giving his third (bowling reassessment) test and I am in doubt regarding his chances in the tournament. So you can say that we are preparing the squad without them (Tamim and Shakib) as we will not be thinking of Shakib if he is not bowling. If BCB feels that he can come after the test, we can go for replacement as we have time," he added.

Teams have been directed by the International Cricket Council (ICC) to name their squad for the 2025 Champions Trophy by January 12. Bangladesh have been drawn in Group A of the tournament, alongside India, Pakistan, and New Zealand.

Shakib Al Hasan's last ODI appearance was in November 2023

Shakib Al Hasan last played an ODI during the 2023 ODI World Cup in India, where he missed the latter stages due to an injury. His last competitive appearance was in November 2024, when he led the Bangla Tigers in the Abu Dhabi T10 League.

The all-rounder, in early 2024, dealt with a retinal condition in his left eye. Even in his final series against India in September 2024, he was dealing with injuries to his finger and shoulder, which led to him bowling only 21 overs in the first Test in Chennai.
