India batter Shubman Gill threw his wicket away in what was a 'brain fade' moment during the second innings of the fifth Border Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) 2024-25 Test in Sydney.

The right-hander, facing Australian debutant Beau Webster, danced down the track, only to get an inside edge. His attempt to charge at the seamer failed and it was a miserable dismissal in the end.

Shubman Gill was sent back for just 13 runs off 15 deliveries. While Rishabh Pant was charging at the other end, there was no need for Gill to try and emulate the same at that stage.

It was an outrageous and needless shot from the Indian batter, to say the least. After his dismissal, Gill received severe criticism from fans on social media.

As his innings lasted just 15 deliveries, a fan criticized the Indian batter, advising him to spend some time at the crease and not just in the nets.

"Shubman Gill ko itni jaldi hai nets mai practice karne ki, 15 minutes pitch pe bhi karle," the fan wrote.

Another fan drew a comparison between Gill and Ruturaj Gaikwad, stating that the latter would have performed better than the former, had he received as many chances.

"Common Knowledge (If Rutu Had Got A Chance To Play As Many Innings As Gill, He Would Have Played & Performed Better Than Gill) :- Ruturaj Gaikwad >>> Shubman Gill," the tweet read.

Given his poor form, another fan asked Gill to go back to domestic cricket, stating Test cricket demands more discipline.

"go back to domestics @shubmangill: tests demands more discipline and come back only when you have it in you.," the fan tweeted.

As legendary former Indian cricketer Sunil Gavaskar had blasted Rishabh Pant for his dismissal in the first innings, a fan asked what Gavaskar had to say about Gill's dismissal in the second.

"What has Gavaskar commented on Shubman Gill's dreadful stroke? Is the 'Stupid, stupid & stupid' criticism reserved only for Rishabh Pant? ##IndvAus."

Another fan deemed Shubman Gill as the 'luckiest' Indian cricketer for retaining his place in the side even after consistent failures. The fan also wrote about Gill's PR and Indian Premier League (IPL) performances being the reason for his inclusion in the Test team.

"Shubman Gill is luckiest cricketer in Indian history. 40 failures in 60 inngs, averaging 15 in away tests.Yet, he gets a guaranteed spot in the playing XI. it's all about PR and IPL performance. Soon PR will post his ODI or IPL innings to maintain his legacy #AUSvIND #ShubmanGill," read the tweet.

Meanwhile, another fan expressed disappointment, stating that his dismissal was ridiculous and a reckless attempt. The fan went to the extent of conveying Gill that he was not Rishabh Pant and needed to realize the importance of his role as a No.3 batter.

"This is ridiculous 😠 completely reckless attempt by Shubman Gill. You are not a rishabh Pant bro. While he was playing attacking shots, there was absolutely no need to imitate him. Why does he always forget he's no.3 batter n your role is most important. Never hold one end 😑."

Further, another fan made a harsh assessment, stating that Gill is surviving on privilege and would have been dropped if he looked anything like Prithvi Shaw.

"Shubman Gill surviving on pretty privilege. Let’s be honest here, If he looked like Prithvi Shaw, he would have been dropped long back. Media would have grilled him for his personal life too," the fan tweeted.

Another fan wrote that this could be the end of Gill's Test career, making a brutal remark.

"R.I.P Shubman Gill's Test Career 26 dec. 2020 - 4 jan. 2025," the tweet read.

Shubman Gill failed to impress in the BGT 2024-25

25-year-old Shubman Gill did not quite live up to the expectations in the BGT 2024-25 series. The right-hander failed to impress with the bat, unable to put up any significant performance.

He played three Tests and five innings, from which he managed to score just 93 runs with a high score of 31. Moreover, he had a poor average of just 18.60 throughout.

While he was dropped for the fourth Test, Rohit Sharma sat out for the fifth, which gave Gill another opportunity in Sydney. However, the batter failed to capitalize, with scores of 20 and 13 in both innings respectively.
