Rishabh Pant gifted away his wicket again on Day 5 of the fourth Test between India and Australia in Melbourne on Monday, December 30. The left-handed batter showed brilliant resolve, scoring 30 runs off 103 balls, before holing out to Mitchell Marsh at wide of long-on off Travis Head's bowling during the third session. As a result, the hosts finally took a wicket after 32 overs in pursuit of a victory.

Pant has failed to live up to expectations in the five-match series in Australia. The southpaw has managed 154 runs in seven innings at an average of 22 without any half-century. The wicketkeeper-batter was the architect behind India's victory in the 2020-21 Border-Gavaskar Trophy when he amassed 274 runs in five innings at an average of 68.50, including two half-centuries.

Pant threw away his wicket again despite strong words from former India captain Sunil Gavaskar, who slammed his shot selection after his dismissal in the first innings where he holed out to Nathan Lyon at third man.

The cricketer-turned-commentator had said on-air (via ABC):

"Stupid, stupid, stupid! You've got two fielders there and you still go for that. You missed the previous shot, and look where you've been caught. He should not be going in that [India's] dressing room, he should be going into the other dressing room."

Fans on X felt Pant should have learned from his first-inning error. One user wrote:

"As disciplined as Rishabh Pant has been, even a monk would struggle to resist that long hop from Travis Head. Somebody better make sure Sunil Gavaskar is ok after that dismissal."

Another user wrote:

"Patience naam ki cheez hi nahi hai bhai Rishabh Pant tere andar (Brother Rishabh Pant, there is no such thing as patience in you)."

A third user added:

"Pant just threw his wicket. Unnecessarily."

A clinical bowling display from Travis Head and Scott Boland helped Australia remove Rishabh Pant and Ravindra Jadeja in the third and final session on Day 5. The Indian all-rounder was caught behind for just two runs off 14 balls.

At the time of writing, the tourists were 138/6 with 23 overs remaining, with Yashasvi Jaiswal and Washington Sundar at the crease. The hosts have set a 340-run target for the visitors.
