Cricket South Africa (CSA) are reportedly waiting for security reports from Bangladesh to decide whether their men's team should tour the country for two matches in October. The ICC's Future Tours Programme has listed the series' beginning as October 21.
According to a report in ESPNcricinfo, the security reports are being compiled and in the meantime, the CSA are in discussions with the South African Cricketers' Association (SACA). Although the report said the CSA are "hopeful" of touring Bangladesh, it won't proceed if the security reports flag any risks.
CSA's assessment, as per the aforementioned report, is that the political situation in Bangladesh has settled after months of violent protests against the former Sheikh Hasina-led government, which saw over 300 people killed and culminated in the Prime Minister fleeing the country. A new government led by Nobel Laureate Dr. Muhammad Yunus is currently in place.
Bangladesh haven't played any cricket at home since May when the women's team hosted India for a five-T20I series. The country was supposed to host the 2024 women's T20 World Cup in October but the ICC shifted it to the UAE due to concerns regarding travel advisories against Bangladesh in many nations.
The report added that CSA's decision would be "collective" and not depend on indvidual concerns while there's currently no plan to shift the series elsewhere. They are expected to take the decision later this week.
Bangladesh are coming off the biggest high, South Africa needs more Test wins
The series would be important for both teams. Bangladesh are at the peak of their Test journey having white-washed Pakistan away from home for the first time ever.
South Africa, meanwhile, are in desperate need of Test wins, having won only two of the six Tests in the current World Test Championship cycle. With only six more Tests to go, they can't afford to lose more than one of them if they have to make it to the final at Lord's next year.
