Punjab skipper Abhishek Sharma scored a 60-ball century in the 2024-25 Vijay Hazare Trophy round five Group C clash against Saurashtra at the Gujarat College Ground in Ahmedabad on Tuesday, December 31. The SunRisers Hyderabad (SRH) batter eventually got dismissed on the first ball of the 33rd over after being caught by Ruchit Ahir off Pranav Karia's bowling.
His 96-ball 170-run knock comprised 22 fours and eight sixes and came at a strike rate of 177.08. Opening alongside Abhishek, Prabhsimran Singh also smashed the hapless Saurashtra bowlers all over the park amassing 125 runs off 95 deliveries.
Studded with 11 fours and eight sixes, Karia ended his stay at the crease. The duo added 298 runs for the first wicket which is now the joint second-highest opening partnership in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, equalling the record set by Bengal’s Abhimanyu Easwaran and Sudip Gharami against Services in Ranchi in 2022.

The record for the highest partnership in the history of the tournament is currently held by Tamil Nadu’s N. Jagadeesan and B. Sai Sudharsan who registered a mammoth 416 runs for the first-wicket partnership against Arunachal Pradesh in Bengaluru in 2022.
This is also the highest opening wicket stand across all List A competitions. Coincidentally, both these games (Bengal vs Services and Tamil Nadu vs Arunachal Pradesh) happened on the same day - November 21, 2022.
Punjab are placed second in the 2024-25 Vijay Hazare Trophy points table
With three wins out of the four matches in the 2024-25 Vijay Hazare Trophy, Punjab are second in Group C. With 12 points at a net run rate of +2.497, they trail group leaders Karnataka by four points.
Karnataka are unbeaten in this year's 50-over domestic tournament, having won all four group matches. Next, they will face Saurashtra at the ADSA Railways Cricket Ground in Ahmedabad on Friday, January 3.
Meanwhile, Punjab will meet Hyderabad in their penultimate Group C fixture at the Narendra Modi Stadium on the same day.
