Veteran Australia and Sydney Sixers batter Steve Smith crafted a hilarious leave in the ongoing Big Bash League (BBL) 2024-25 fixture against the Perth Scorchers at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG). In a video that surfaced on social media, the 35-year-old hilariously let the ball go down the leg side, leaving the commentators in splits on Saturday, January 11.

The incident occurred in the fifth over of the innings as Scorchers' right-arm seamer Andrew Tye sprayed a delivery way down the leg side. It initially seemed the former Aussie captain would play it but he decided to let the ball go at the very last second by getting down on one knee. The commentators said they had seen that before from him.

Below is the video of the same:

The New South Welshman, known for his quirky stance and approach while tackling tricky conditions and bowlers, left deliveries similarly during the 2019 Ashes in England, especially during the Lord's Test.

Meanwhile, the star batter raced to a 36-ball half-century with a boundary off Jhye Richardson's bowling in the 13th over of the innings. Left-arm spinner Ashton Agar broke the 113-run stand between Smith and Moises Henriques by dismissing the latter for 46 off 28 deliveries.

The ongoing fixture is one of the three BBL games that the 35-year-old will play before heading to Sri Lanka for a two-Test tour, beginning on January 29 in Galle. With Pat Cummins on paternity leave, the selectors have handed over the captaincy reins to the right-hander for the tour to the Island nation.

Having already sealed a spot in the 2025 World Test Championship (WTC) final, the series against Sri Lanka is their final of the current cycle, and the defending champions would want to end it strongly.
