Steve Smith smashes hundred off 58 balls in comeback BBL match after BGT 2024-25 heroics [Watch]

Star Australia and Sydney Sixers batter Steve Smith lit up his home ground with a blistering 58-ball ton in the Big Bash League (BBL) 2024-25 fixture on Saturday (January 11) against the Perth Scorchers. The right-handed batter got to the magical three-figure mark in the 19th over of the innings, making it his third ton in the last seven BBL innings.

The 35-year-old began the 19th over of the innings on 91 and got to 95 by slicing an outside-off delivery to the third man region for a boundary. With four more runs and a couple of braces in the next three deliveries, the veteran reached 99. He steered a wide delivery to the off-side for a single on the second-last delivery of the innings and raised his helmet in celebration.

The former Australia captain is coming off a productive five-Test series (BGT 2024-25) against India, playing an instrumental role in helping the hosts regain the Border-Gavaskar Trophy for the first time in 10 years. After starting the series with a golden duck, followed by scores of 17 and 2, Smith clattered crucial centuries in Brisbane and Melbourne.

The first innings of the final Test in Sydney saw him score a vital 33 in tricky batting conditions to help the home side whittle Team India's lead. Overall, the New South Welshman finished the five-Test series with 314 runs at 34.88.

Smith was particularly brutal against left-arm seamer Jason Behrendorff in the 20th over, carting him for three sixes to walk off unbeaten at 121 off 64 deliveries, laced with 10 fours and seven maximums. At the other end, Ben Dwarshuis stayed not out on 23 off seven balls, putting on an unbroken 58-run partnership with Smith to lift the Sixers to 220/3 in 20 overs.

The Sixers are currently second in the standings with four wins and two losses in seven matches. The fixture against the Brisbane Heat ended in no result due to wet weather.
