Team India conceded a second consecutive Test series with a 1-3 loss to Australia in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. The hard-fought series was capped off by the hosts pulling off a six-wicket win in the final Test in Sydney.
Coming off the shocking 0-3 home series loss against New Zealand, India stunned the Aussies with a sensational win in the opening encounter in Perth. However, Pat Cummins' men fought hard to win three out of the next four games to finish with a dominant final scoreline.
It was also India's first Test series loss to Australia since 2014-14, having won the last four rubbers. With the Sydney defeat, India have now lost six out of their last eight Tests, eliminating them from the 2025 World Test Championship (WTC) final.
Fans on X slammed Team India for the series loss to Australia, with one fan writing:
"Successfully won Drama Award & best drama actor award to Virat Kohli."
Fans continued going hard at the Indian side for the series loss with one saying:
"Always Sunday and Travis Head for India."
"First time I’m happy with India’s loss. Batting collapse, WORST coach and coaching decisions, no left-arm bowler (Arshdeep) in the squad, and playing 2 spinners at SCG. Respect to Bumrah for handling the pressure alone," tweeted a fan.
"It's time to not celebrate this worship culture of so called star players. When we won T20 world cup. BCCI arranged grand event at Mumbai. Since then we started loosing games specially against SENA countries barring T20 side. We need players who have hunger," a fan said.
"We’ve shown that we have a lot of talent in our group" - Jasprit Bumrah
Indian captain Jasprit Bumrah felt the youngsters have much to take away from the hard-fought Australian series despite the eventual defeat.
While Bumrah finished as the leading wicket-taker in the series with 32 wickets at an average of 13.06, young opener Yashasvi Jaiswal was the second-highest run-getter with 391 runs at an average of 43.44.
Bumrah said at the post-match presentation, Bumrah said [via Cricbuzz]:
"They’ve (youngsters) gained a lot of experience, they’ll go from strength to strength. We’ve shown that we have a lot of talent in our group. Lot of the youngsters are keen, they’re disappointed that we haven’t won but they’ll take learnings from this experience. It was a great series, congratulations to Australia, they fought really well."
This will be the first time India have not qualified for the WTC final, after finishing runners-up in 2021 and 2023.
