Indian cricket fans welcomed reports (The Times of India) of captain Rohit Sharma being rested for the fifth Test of the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy between Australia and India. Taking to their respective social media (X) handles, supporters of various hues supported this alleged decision of the management.
Many supporters went as far as to say that this move would benefit Indian cricket as Sharma had been struggling for form, and would be better off making way for a youngster. Indeed, Sharma's returns have been pitiful this series, amassing just 31 runs in the five innings he has played and averaging 6.20.
Dr. K K Reddy, a cricket fan, wrote this on his X account:
"Professional Sport should be ruthless. Perform or perish. Stop being a sucker for romantic farewells. The rope has been extended too long already for Rohit. Kohli better start pulling his weight, else he too should go. We are grateful for their services but it is time to move on."
Here are some more reactions by fans on X:
Rohit Sharma has amassed just 31 runs in the ongoing series
Sharma's form has been worrisome this series, having scored just 31 runs in five innings. He has looked all at sea against seamers, and especially listless against deliveries at a good length, which the Aussies have exploited ruthlessly.
His contemporary Virat Kohli too has not had a great series although the 100 not out he bagged in the first Test in Perth seems to have weighed the decision in his favor. Otherwise, he too would have been facing a similar situation.
If Sharma is indeed rested, as the reports suggest, Jasprit Bumrah could be asked to lead India. He did so with exceptional flair in the first Test in Perth, which they won. Australia currently lead the series 2-1 and India desperately need a win in the final Test of the series.
