Former Australian legend Mark Waugh joked about the floodlight failure at the Adelaide Oval on Friday, December 6, during the second Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) 2024-25 Test. On the opening day of the Test match, the floodlights went off twice in a short span.
The incident took place during Australia's innings following the tea break. Harshit Rana was bowling the 18th over when the floodlights went off, halting play. They went off again in the same over, prompting Waugh to make fun of the incident from the commentary box.
“Oh hello. They’ve run out of electricity in Adelaide. Pretty hot today. Plenty of air conditioners on,” Mark Waugh said on commentary for Fox Cricket (via Indian Express).
Indian commentator Harsha Bhogle, who was in the commentary box alongside Waugh, also joked about the situation, saying that it was the first time he had experienced something like that.
“Someone’s fallen asleep, so we have to wait. It’s a first for me, a Test match being stopped because the lights are gone. Is anyone there?” Bhogle said.
After the floodlights came back, Bhogle said:
"The lights are on again. Someone just turned the switch back on."
Australia on top after Day 1 of 2nd BGT 2024-25 Test
Coming into the Adelaide Test on the back of a defeat in Perth, Australia got off to an excellent start despite being asked to bowl first by Indian captain Rohit Sharma. Mitchell Starc dismissed Yashasvi Jaiswal off the very first delivery of the match to set the tone for the home side.
KL Rahul and Shubman Gill then stitched together a short partnership before Starc came back hunting again. The Australian bowlers picked up wickets consistently to bowl out the Indian side for 180. Starc returned with a six-wicket haul, while Pat Cummins and Scott Boland picked up two apiece.
Australia are off to a solid start in response. Despite losing Usman Khawaja, Nathan McSweeney and Marnus Labuschagne showed great maturity to see the day through. Australia are currently batting at 86/1 at stumps on Day 1, still trailing by 94 runs. India have a 1-0 lead in the five-match BGT series.
