Yashasvi Jaiswal's dismissal stirred controversy on the fifth day (Monday, December 30) of the fourth Border Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) 2024-25 Test in Melbourne.
The decision has been questioned and criticized by many, including Rajeev Shukla, who is the BCCI (Board of Control for Cricket in India) vice-president. Rajeev Shukla took to X (formerly Twitter) to express his opinion on Yashasvi Jaiswal's dismissal.
He stated that the Indian opener was not out and blamed the third umpire for not taking what the technology suggested into consideration. As the Indian batter was given not out on the field initially, Shukla added that the third umpire should have solid reasons to overrule the decision.
"Yashaswi jayaswal was clearly not out. Third umpire should have taken note of what technology was suggesting. While over ruling field umpire third umpire should have solid reasons . @BCCI @ICC @ybj_19," his tweet read.
The decision came as a huge blow for India. Jaiswal was batting on 84, holding the fort at one end as the visitors kept losing wickets at the other. However, they crumbled further after his dismissal and were eventually bowled out for 155, losing the Test by 184 runs.
Why was Yashasvi Jaiswal's dismissal a controversial one?
Yashasvi Jaiswal was sent back to the hut after a controversial decision during the penultimate ball of the 71st over by Australian skipper Pat Cummins. Jaiswal looked to pull the ball but appeared to have gloved it behind to Alex Carey.
He was initially given not out by the on-field umpires but Australia challenged the call, taking the review. While the side-on replays did show that the ball hit the bottom glove, there was no spike on Snicko.
However, as there was a deflection, the third umpire went with the visual evidence and declared him out. The decision was overturned despite nothing on the Snicko. Yashasvi Jaiswal was unhappy and many were left confused as to how he was given out.
Therefore, the overturning of the on-field call seemed to be a controversial call as Jaiswal had to ultimately walk back.
