Trichy Grand Cholas defeated SKM Salem Spartans and Chepauk Super Gillies upstaged Dindigul Dragons in match number 12 and 13, respectively, of the 2024 Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL) season at Sri Ramakrishna College Ground on July 14.
The Lyca Kovai Kings remain atop the TNPL 2024 points table, thanks to their unbeaten run so far in the tournament. Trichy Grand Cholas solidified their second position after beating SKM Salem Spartans.
Chepauk Super Gillies and Nellai Royal Kings are placed at number three and number four with an NRR of 0.253 and -0.023, respectively. With a win and two defeats each to their credit from three outings, only NRR differentiates fifth-placed IDream Tiruppur Tamizhans and sixth-placed Dindigul Dragons.
SKM Salem Spartans are ranked seventh while Siechem Madurai Panthers are placed at the bottom of the table with a dismal NRR of -1.237.
Trichy secure big win, Chepauk bag rain-marred affair
Trichy Grand Cholas scored 198/5 in the first innings after they were invited to bat first by SKM Salem Spartans captain Shijit Chandran. Number four batter Jafar Jamal's 32 off 23 balls and middle-order batter Sanjay Yadav's 33-ball 68 helped Trichy reach a dominant total. M Poiyamozhi’s three-fer (3/56) came at a disappointing economy of 14 for the Spartans.
Chasing 199 for a win, the SKM Salem Spartans were bowled out for just 163 runs in 18.3 overs and lost the match by 35 runs to the Trichy Grand Cholas. For the Spartans, Rajendran Vivek clubbed a 10-ball 33 while Sunny Sandhu scored 29 off 15. Saravana Kumar (3/28) and Athisayaraj Davidson (1/24) got rid of the dangerous batters.
In the second match of the evening and 13th of the TNPL 2024 season, Dindigul Dragons made 64/6 in a seven-over innings after constant rain interruptions. Captain Ravichandran Ashwin himself clubbed 45* off just 20 balls to defy the likes of Abhishek Tanwar (2/15) and Ganeshan Periyasamy (2/17).
In response, Chepauk Super Gillies reached the 65-run target in just 4.5 overs and with nine wickets to spare. Opener Narayan Jagadeesan top-scored with an unbeaten 14-ball 32, while captain Baba Aparajith at number three scored 31* off 14 balls.
