The third day of the 2024 Tamil Nadu Premier League witnessed two thrilling last-ball finishes at the Salem Cricket Foundation Ground on July 7. In the first match of the day and the fourth of the season, Nellai Royal Kings came up clutch in the final over to secure a narrow three-wicket win. Meanwhile, in the evening game, Lyca Kovai Kings held off IDream Tiruppur Tamizhans to maintain their unbeaten run in this tournament.

Owing to the second outcome of the day, Lyca Kovai Kings jumped to the top of the TNPL 2024 points table. They have registered two wins from as many games with a healthy NRR of 0.350. Dindigul Dragons and Siechem Madurai Panthers both lost a rung each to slip to second and third respectively on the eight-team standings.

Nellai Royal Kings, for their last-ball win over IDream Tiruppur Tamizhans, opened their account on the points table as they sit fourth. Winless IDream Tiruppur Tamizhans, Chepauk Super Gillies, SKM Salem Spartans, and Trichy Grand Cholas occupy the next four slots to round up the points table.

Nellai Royal Kings, Lyca Kovai Kings win sea-saw thrillers on July 7

In the first match of the day, Chepauk Super Gillies charted a competitive 166-run total, with opener Narayan Jagadeesan smacking an imperial 63* off 46 balls. D Santhosh Kumar also scored 41 from 29 while captain Baba Aparajith contributed with 24 runs from his end.

Among the Nellai Royal Kings bowlers, Ragupathy Silambarasan claimed three out of the six CSG wickets that fell in the innings. Meanwhile, Mohan Prasath and Sonu Yadav also struck once in their respective four-over spells.

In pursuit of 167 for a win, the Royal Kings perfected their run-chase response to secure a win off the final ball of the match. Opener Mokit Hariharan and middle-order batter Nidhish Rajagopal clubbed identical half-centuries to lead their team’s run-scoring charge in a winning cause.

Between Lyca Kovai Kings and IDream Tiruppur Tamizhans later in the day, the former batted first and conjured 160-7 from 20 overs. Captain M Shahrukh Khan pounded 55 from 30 balls while S Sujay and Balasubramaniam Sachin unfurled handy contributions at the top. Ace speedster T Natarajan and Ajith Ram both claimed two wickets each for the IDream Tiruppur Tamizhans.

The Kovai Kings' total turned out to be a match-winning one. Skipper Shahrukh Khan and fast bowler Mohammed Mohammed struck four times between them. Despite a sizzling 81 from opener Tushar Raheja, the IDream Tiruppur Tamizhans came up short by just one run in the final ball of the match.
