The league stage of the Tamil Nadu Premier League 2024 season came to a conclusion on Sunday, July 28 with a double-header at Dindigul’s NPR College Ground.
Lyca Kovai Kings finished the opening round of the competition at the top of the TNPL 2024 points table with six wins and a defeat from seven matches. They are followed by IDream Tiruppur Tamizhans with eight points from seven outings at an NRR of 0.677.
Chepauk Super Gillies and Dindigul Dragons also finished the league stage with eight points. They occupy the third and fourth positions respectively on the eight-team standings on the basis of NRR disparity.
Nellai Royal Kings bowed out of the competition’s playoffs race by finishing fifth after defeating Dindigul Dragons on July 28. Trichy Grand Cholas are ranked sixth with six points courtesy of three wins. Siechem Madurai Panthers are seventh while SKM Salem Spartans finished as season’s wooden-spooners with just one win.
Madurai, Nellai claim consolation wins to bow out of playoffs race
In the first match of the day, Siechem Madurai Panthers batted first and amassed 191/4 from 20 overs. Opener Suresh Lokeshwar smacked a six-laden 55 while unbeaten number three Jagatheesan Kousik listed 43 off 24 balls. P Saravanan and NS Chaturvedi added quickfire 20s in the death overs to take their team to a monumental total upfront.
Chasing 192, Chepauk Super Gillies made 182/8 to fall nine runs short of their target. Madurai spinner Karthick Manikandan took the steam out of Chepauk’s batting charge by picking up three wickets in three overs. Ajay Krishna also claimed two wickets for Siechem Madurai Panthers while Gurjapneet Singh, P Saravanan, and Murugan Ashwin chipped in with a wicket each.
In match 28 of the competition, Nellai Royal Kings bowlers restricted Dindigul Dragons to 136 inside 20 overs. Sonu Yadav picked up 2/23 for the Royal Kings. He received timely assistance through a wicket each from teammates N Kabilan, NS Harish, Ragupathy Silambarasan, and J Rohan.
In response, it took Nellai Royal Kings just 17.5 overs to overhaul their target with four wickets to spare. Opener Arun Karthik top-scored with 30-ball 45 before captain Guruswamy Ajitesh composed 43* runs to seal the chase for his team.
