Pakistan stalwart Babar Azam relinquished his role as the national team's white-ball captain on Wednesday after a disappointing run. He took over from Shaheen Afridi in April for his second reign ahead of the T20I series against New Zealand.
Azam earlier resigned as skipper following his team's dismal campaign at the 2023 ODI World Cup in India. Shaheen took over as T20I captain after that, but PCB unceremoniously sacked him earlier this year and reappointed Babar.
The move did not yield the desired dividends, as Pakistan performed poorly in the 2024 T20 World Cup, exiting in the group stage. They also suffered a loss against the USA for the first time in their cricketing history during the tournament.
Babar Azam has also not been in decent form as a batter over the past year. Babar Azam led Pakistan in 85 T20Is and 43 ODIs, winning 48 and 26 matches, respectively, in his two stints as captain.
Fans took note of the development and expressed their reactions to the matter by sharing memes on X (formerly known as Twitter). Here are some of the best memes:
"I want to prioritize my performance, enjoy my batting, and spend quality time with my family"- Babar Azam
Babar Azam informed everyone about his decision to resign from Pakistan's white-ball captaincy by sharing a post on his X handle on Wednesday (October 2). The stalwart stated that he intends to prioritize his batting and wants to spend quality time with his family going forward after relinquishing the leadership responsibilities. Babar wrote:
"I'm sharing some news with you today. I have decided to resign as captain of the Pakistan men's cricket team, effective as of my notification to the PCB and Team Management last month."
"It's been an honour to lead this team, but it's time for me to step down and focus on my playing role. Captaincy has been a rewarding experience, but it's added a significant workload. I want to prioritize my performance, enjoy my batting, and spend quality time with my family, which brings me joy."
He continued:
"By stepping down, I will gain clarity moving forward and focus more energy on my game and personal growth. I'm grateful for your unwavering support and belief in me. Your enthusiasm has meant the world to me. I'm proud of what we've achieved together and excited to continue contributing to the team as a player. Thank you for your love and support."
