Uttar Pradesh has been one of the biggest hubs for cricket in India. The state already has two active international cricket stadiums in Kanpur and Lucknow. UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has announced that a new stadium will be built in Gorakhpur next.
As per India Today, Yogi Adityanath made this announcement on January 3 during the inauguration of Gorakhpur's first mini sports complex. The location for the sports complex is the Raptinagar area of Gorakhpur, with the approximate area being 33 acres.
During the announcement, the Chief Minister emphasized on the government's commitment to promoting sports at all levels. The new complex will have a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model to ensure the athletes get high-quality facilities and infrastructure.
With the construction of this stadium, the government aims to generate more jobs for athletes. Plans are also underway for having rural sports leagues to boost the sports culture at the village level.
Gorakhpur becomes the 2nd city of Uttar Pradesh to get a new cricket stadium in 2020s
Uttar Pradesh is already home to two active international venues. The first and oldest is Green Park of Kanpur, which recently hosted the second match of the Test series between India and Bangladesh. The other venue is the Bharat Ratna Shree Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Stadium of Lucknow. It is the home of IPL team Lucknow Super Giants.
Apart from these two venues, the Uttar Pradesh government has also built a brand new stadium in Varanasi, which is expected to be ready by the end of 2025. The venue will have a seating capacity of 30,000, which can be expanded to 40,000 if needed.
With the construction for the new stadium in Gorakhpur underway, Uttar Pradesh will soon be home to four international venues. It will be exciting to see if Team India play a match in Varanasi and Gorakhpur in the near future.
