Australian stars Steve Smith, Josh Hazlewood, Travis Head, Nathan Lyon, Mitchell Starc, Marnus Labuschagne, and others were recently asked to pick the next Indian superstar between Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shubman Gill. While most went for young attacking opener Jaiswal, a couple of them picked Gill. The two sides shift their focus toward the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, beginning in November.

Smith, Starc, Lyon, Hazlewood, and Alex Carey chose Jaiswal as the next generational superstar while Cameron Green and Head named Gill. Labuschagne, on the other hand, touted both Indian openers to become superstars.

India and Australia will battle over five Tests, starting in Perth on November 22, for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. India have won the previous four bilateral Test series between the sides while the Aussies won their last meeting in the 2023 World Test Championship (WTC) final.

While Shubman Gill debuted for India in Tests in Australia during the 2020-21 tour, Yashasvi Jaiswal has yet to play an international match Down Under. The upcoming series will also be Jaiswal's first-ever Test series against Australia.

Yashasvi Jaiswal vs Shubman Gill in international cricket

Despite Gill and Jaiswal being only 25 and 22, respectively, the former has been playing international cricket since 2019 while the latter debuted only last year.

Gill boasts an incredible record in ODIs, averaging 58.20 at a strike rate of 101.74 in 47 outings. The 50-over format remains the only one Jaiswal has yet to feature in for India.

Yet, Jaiswal has considerably better numbers than Gill in Tests and T20Is. The 22-year-old averages a stunning 68.53 in his nine-Test career with three centuries, including a 214* against England earlier this year. Gill has struggled in the red-ball format, averaging 35.52 with four centuries in 25 outings.

Yashasvi Jaiswal also has impressive T20I numbers — an average of 36.15 and a strike rate of 164.31 in 23 games. Meanwhile, Gill averages a tick over 30 with a strike rate of 139.27 in 21 T20Is.

However, with the upcoming Australian series in mind, it is worth mentioning that Gill has an excellent record against them in Tests. The stylish batter averages 44.40 in six Tests against the Aussies, including an average of almost 52 in the matches played in Australia.
