Cameron Bancroft of the Thunder collides with Daniel Sams of the Thunder while taking a catch during the BBL match between Perth Scorchers and Sydney Thunder at Optus Stadium, on January 03, 2025, in Perth, Australia.

A shocking collision took place in the ongoing Big Bash League (BBL) match between the Perth Scorchers and the Sydney Thunder at the Perth Stadium on Friday, January 3. The incident took place in the 16th over of the first innings when the Scorchers were batting.

Lockie Ferguson bowled a fullish delivery on the leg stump to the Scorchers' batter Cooper Connolly, who whipped it towards deep square leg. The ball was high up in the air and Cameron Bancroft and Daniel Sams both went for the catch, with the former running backward.

The fielders did not call and as a result, neither saw the other coming for the catch and ended up in a ghastly-looking collision. Both banged their respective faces into each other, with Bancroft holding on but Sams lying flat on the ground almost immediately.

Fortunately, the medical team took quick action and the players were attended to immediately. Sams was stretchered off the field of play after some time as the game was brought to a halt, and he is not expected to take any further part. Liam Hatcher was named as the replacement for Sams in this match.

Sydney Thunder can overtake Perth Scorchers in the BBL table if they win

The Perth Scorchers are currently ranked in the second position in the BBL table with six points to their name whereas the Sydney Sixers lead the standings with nine points inside their kitty.

A win in this game will still see the Scorchers remain in the second position of the table. The Sydney Thunder, meanwhile, are closing in on the Scorchers, and are perched upon the third position with six points as well.

If the Thunder manage to beat the Scorchers in the game, they will climb over their opponents and go on to the second position in the BBL standings. The Thunder have played only four games so far this season, while the Scorchers have played five.
