New Zealand all-rounder Daryl Mitchell smashed four consecutive sixes off Sri Lanka skipper Charith Asalanka's bowling during the third T20I at the Saxton Oval in Nelson on Thursday, January 2.
The incident happened in the 15th over of the Kiwis' innings while they were chasing the target of 219 runs in the final game of the three-match T20I series. Mitchell began the blitzkrieg by launching one straight down the ground for the first maximum.
The second six went into the crowd over the long-on region. The third and fourth sixes were once again lofted straight down the ground as they cleared the sightscreen with ease.
Here's the video of Daryl Mitchell's four consecutive sixes off Charith Asalanka:
Daryl Mitchell eventually got dismissed for 35 runs off 17 balls after being caught by Chamindu Wickramasinghe off Nuwan Thushara's bowling. His knock included a solitary boundary and those four sixes at a strike rate of 205.88.
The 33-year-old ended the series as New Zealand's highest run-getter (115 runs) having already amassed 62 runs and 18 runs, respectively, in the first two matches at Mount Maunganui.
In pursuit of a 3-0 series whitewash, the hosts were off to a flyer in Nelson with openers Tim Robinson (37 off 21) and Rachin Ravindra adding 81 runs for the first wicket in 7.2 overs. Ravindra emerged as the top-scorer for the Blackcaps with 69 runs off 39 balls, comprising five fours and four sixes at a strike rate of 176.92.
Unfortunately, it wasn't enough for Mitchell Santner's men as they managed 211/7 in their 20 overs, thereby losing the contest by seven runs.
Despite the defeat in the final T20I, New Zealand clinched the series by a 2-1 margin as they won the first and second T20Is at the Bay Oval. Kusal Perera was named Player of the Match for his match-winning century. 30-year-old pacer Jacob Duffy was adjudged Player of the Series for finishing on top of the bowling charts with eight scalps to his name in three matches.
