In a video released by official broadcasters BBC, former England speedster David Willey was seen jokingly accusing former West Indies all-rounder Carlos Brathwaite of costing Willey his career. The conversation took place during a live show as the Englishman entered the scene wearing his Player of the Match medal after match number three of The Hundred Men's Competition 2024. Welsh Fire beat Manchester Originals at the Emirates Old Trafford on Thursday, July 25.
"You cost me a career mate," Willey said after unintentionally ignoring Brathwaite for a handshake.
Here's the video:
Carlos Brathwaite's heroics in the final over bowled by Ben Stokes during the 2016 ICC Men's T20 World Cup final at the iconic Eden Gardens (Kolkata) helped the West Indies claim their second T20 World Cup title in style. David Willey bowled exceptionally well and was the pick of the bowlers, finishing with the figures of 3-20 in his four overs on that evening in Kolkata.
Unfortunately, it wasn't enough to restrict Daren Sammy's men who were chasing a target of 156 runs for the glory, as Brathwaite smashed four sixes off the first over deliveries when 19 runs were needed in the last over bowled by Ben Stokes.
David Willey stars in Welsh Fire's commanding start to their Hundred 2024 campaign
Welsh Fire skipper Tom Abbell won the toss and opted to field first. Put into bat, the Manchester Originals failed to get going as they kept losing wickets at regular intervals. They finished their innings at 86-8, with David Willey picking up three wickets for 14 runs in his 20-ball spell.
The left-arm pacer was adjudged the Player of the Match for his match-winning spell. Chasing 87 runs for a victory, Welsh Fire achieved the target in just 57 balls at the loss of two wickets, thereby registering a commanding win to begin their Hundred 2024 campaign. Next up, the Welsh Fire will be facing Oval Invincibles at the Sophia Gardens in Cardiff on Sunday, July 28.
