The onus will be on Team India's Virat Kohli to fire with the bat in the fourth innings of the ongoing Boxing Day Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) 2024-25 against Australia in Melbourne. On the sidelines of the crucial encounter, the ace batter was seen interacting with teammate Shubman Gill, who gave a gentle pat on the iconic batter's head.
A video has surfaced on social media, in which Gill can be seen patting Kohli on the head as they two walked near the boundary rope. You can watch the video of the incident below:
Shubman Gill was left out of India's playing XI for the Boxing Day Test in favor of spin-bowling all-rounder Washington Sundar. The top-order batter also missed the Test series opener in Perth due to a finger injury. He has scored 60 runs across three innings at an average of 20 in the series.
Virat Kohli, on the other hand, looked in great control in India's first innings of the Melbourne Test. The seasoned campaigner looked set for a big score but was dismissed by Scott Boland for 36. He was also involved in a run out that resulted in the well-set Yashasvi Jaiswal losing his wicket after an 82-run knock.
"Somebody like Virat Kohli would definitely have made it" - Sunil Gavaskar on Yashasvi Jaiswal's run out in Boxing Day Test
Yashasvi Jaiswal and Virat Kohli stitched together a stunning 102-run partnership for the second wicket in the first innings of the Boxing Day Test. However, their stand ended, courtesy of a horrible mix-up.
Commenting on the incident, India batting legend Sunil Gavaskar opined that Kohli would have easily completed the single had he not been busy looking at the fielder from the non-striker's end. Speaking to Star Sports, the cricketer-turned-commentator said (as quoted as saying by Hindustan Times):
"It would have been a quick run, and somebody like Virat Kohli would definitely have made it. But the thing was, he looked at the fielder. When you look at the fielder, when you turn, you’ve lost that vital second. And so naturally, you then think, ‘No, I want to be able to make it.’ Your balance is completely off. And it would have been a tight run."
Meanwhile, Australia were bowled out for 234 in their second innings, setting India a 340-run target. Jasprit Bumrah was once again the pick of the bowlers for the visitors, claiming a splendid five-wicket haul.
