India’s pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah showed a rare sheepish moment after dismissing Australia opener Usman Khawaja on Day 1 (Thursday, December 26) of the fourth Test of the 2024-25 Border Gavaskar Trophy (BGT). The match is being played at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG).
The dismissal came on the first ball of the 45th over. Jasprit Bumrah bowled a harmless short delivery, and Khawaja, slightly early on the pull, toe-ended it straight to short mid-wicket, where KL Rahul took a simple catch. The India vice-captain, astonished by his luck, hid his face behind his hands while wearing a wide smile.
Here is a video of the dismissal:
The southpaw scored 57 off 121 balls, including six boundaries. His dismissal left Australia at 154/2 after 44.1 overs.
Australia in control on Day 1 of the 4th BGT Test 2024-25
The hosts won the toss and chose to bat first, with Sam Konstas earning his debut cap and Scott Boland replacing the injured Josh Hazlewood. Meanwhile, the visitors brought in Washington Sundar in place of Shubman Gill.
Jasprit Bumrah started brilliantly with a maiden over. Debutant Konstas made things interesting by attempting a reverse scoop against Bumrah in the third over but missed.
However, the 19-year-old found his groove in the seventh over, flawlessly executing the shot and smashing Jasprit Bumrah for two boundaries and a six. Konstas reached his fifty off 52 balls, becoming the second-youngest Australian to achieve the feat, which also allowed Usman Khawaja to settle in at the other end.
Ravindra Jadeja provided the visitors with the first breakthrough, ending the 89-run opening partnership, as he dismissed Konstas for 60 off 65 balls, including six boundaries and two sixes.
Khawaja, battling through, scored his 27th Test fifty before being dismissed by Bumrah for 57. At the time of writing, Australia were 165/2 after 50 overs, with Marnus Labuschagne on 38 and Steven Smith on 6 at the crease. The BGT 2024-25 is level at 1-1.
