India captain Jasprit Bumrah smashed a six off his Australian counterpart Pat Cummins on Day 1 (Friday, January 3) of the fifth Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) 2024-25 Test in Sydney. The right-handed batter played a helping hand, scoring 22 runs off 17 balls, as the tourists reached 185 in their first essay.

The stunning shot came in the 73rd over of the innings. Cummins bowled a slower delivery outside off and Bumrah smashed it over deep mid-wicket for a six. This was the second time he hit a six off the Aussie skipper in the ongoing series, having hit him over deep fine leg in the third Test in Brisbane.

On Friday, however, Bumrah was caught by Mitchell Starc at mid-wicket off the very next delivery by Cummins after a top edge off a shot ball.

On the bowling front, Bumrah has been exceptional with the ball, picking up 30 wickets in the first four Tests of the five-game series.

Jasprit Bumrah and company bundled out for low score on Day 1 of 5th BGT Test

A clinical bowling display helped Australia bundle out Jasprit Bumrah and company for 185 in the first innings of the fifth BGT 2024-25 Test on Day 1. Scott Boland was the wreaker-in-chief, returning with figures of 4/31. The 35-year-old also became the oldest pacer to complete 50 wickets in Tests.

Meanwhile, Mitchell Starc and Pat Cummins chipped in with three and two wickets, respectively. Nathan Lyon got rid of well-set Shubman Gill (20).

Rishabh Pant top scored with 40 off 98, hitting one six and three boundaries. Ravindra Jadeja also chipped in with 26 off 95.

India’s regular skipper Rohit Sharma dropped himself for the fifth Test after managing just 31 runs in five innings in the series. As a skipper, the 37-year-old also lost five out of the last six Tests.

Australia are leading the five-Test series 2-1 following their 184-run win in Melbourne. The hosts had also won the pink-ball Test by 10 wickets in Adelaide. India have looked clueless since their 295-run win in the series opener in Perth. The third Test in Brisbane ended in a draw.

At Stumps on Day 1, the hosts were 9/1, with Sam Konstas at the crease. Usman Khawaja was caught by KL Rahul in the slip as Bumrah provided the visitors with the first breakthrough off the last ball of the day
