Team India's stand-in captain Jasprit Bumrah struck to remove Travis Head in the first over of his new spell on Day 4 of the opening Test against Australia at the Optus Stadium in Perth. After the wicket, the Indian skipper was seen celebrating aggressively with Virat Kohli.
The dismissal occurred in the 39th over of the innings as the skipper pushed the left-handed batter back on the crease with a bouncer. With Head hanging back, he fiddled at a back-of-a-length delivery outside off-stump, but could only manage a thick edge to Rishabh Pant behind the stumps.
Here's Head's wicket and the wild celebrations that followed:
Head, who counterattacked during his brief stay in the first innings before Harshit Rana dismissed him, once again showed excellent intent. The South Australian narrowly missed out on his hundred, departing for 89, leaving Australia on the verge of defeat.
Jasprit Bumrah triggered Australia's first innings batting collapse
The 30-year-old sparked the home side's batting collapse on Day 1 after Team India were bowled out for 150. Bumrah took the wickets of Nathan McSweeney, Usman Khawaja, Steve Smith, Alex Carey and Pat Cummins to leave Australia reeling.
Eventually, Mitchell Starc's 26 dragged them to 104. The tourists batted big in the second innings as Yashasvi Jaiswal (161) and Virat Kohli (100*) peeled off centuries to set the opposition an improbable 534 for victory. The right-arm pacer returned on the third evening and dismissed McSweeney and Marnus Labuschagne to leave the hosts teetering at 12-3.
Earlier on Day 4, Mohammed Siraj claimed the scalps of Khawaja and Steve Smith to push Australia onto the backfoot. Having won all four of their previous Tests at the Optus Stadium since 2018, Australia are on the verge of losing their first at the venue.
The hosts will be keen to bounce back in the second Test, a pink-ball affair beginning on December 6 at the Adelaide Oval.
