West Indies all-rounder Kyle Mayers produced an incredible no-look short-arm pull that traveled the distance in the Global T20 Canada 2024 clash between Brampton Wolves (BTW) and Surrey Jaguars (SJG) on Sunday, August 4. After being asked to bat first, Mayers opened the batting for SJG and went into overdrive straightaway.
The southpaw picked up a short-of-a-length delivery from Jack Jarvis in the second ball of the innings and sent it sailing over the backward square leg region for a massive maximum. It reminded yesteryear cricket fans of a shot that defined West Indian legend Brian Lara.
It was also a shot reminiscent of the Nataraj pull executed by the legendary Indian all-rounder Kapil Dev during the 1980s.
Here is a video of Mayers pulling off the stunning no-look shot to kickstart his innings:
Following the audacious six, Mayers smashed a boundary in the final ball of the over to kickstart his and SJG's innings in style. However, his vigil was cut short when he was cleaned up for 18 from 12 deliveries in the fourth over.
The West Indian has endured a dismal 2024 Global T20 Canada campaign thus far, averaging a mere 15.75 at a strike rate of under 99 in five outings.
Kyle Mayers' SJG continue dismal 2024 Global T20 Canada campaign
Kyle Mayers' early dismissal after promising much led to another sorry batting performance from SJG as they were bowled out for a below-par 124 in 19.2 overs with only skipper Marcus Stoinis scoring over 30 runs (39 off 23).
In reply, BTW easily chased down the target in the 16th over and lost only four wickets.
The loss was SJG's third in four completed games, leaving them fifth in the six-team race with three points in five overall matches (one no result). They will likely have to win both their remaining group-stage encounters to have a chance to qualify for the playoffs.
SJG will play the fourth-placed Bangla Tigers Mississauga in their next game on Monday, August 5.
As for BTW, it was their third consecutive win and fourth in six games as they maintained the top spot on the points table. Their final group-stage fixture will be against the Bangla Tigers Mississauga on Tuesday, August 6.
