Team India wicket-keeper Rishabh Pant suffered several blows to his body in a testing second session on Day 1 of the fifth Border-Gavaskar series Test at the Sydney Cricket Ground. The left-handed batter was even hit on his helmet grill off a ferocious Mitchell Starc bouncer, which read 145 kmph on the speedometer.
During the 37th over of the innings, Starc banged it short, leaving no time for Pant to deal with it. The batter could not play at it or evade with a sway or a duck and had to deal with it head-on. As a result, he was devastatingly hit on the side of the helmet, on the grill.
Mitchell Starc ran towards the other end with his follow-through to make sure Pant was fine. He expressed concern and put a hand on his shoulder while the batter assessed the damage to his helmet. The physios came out to the middle for a mandatory concussion check too, as Pant took a much-required breather.
Apart from the scathing blow to his helmet, Pant also copped blows on his bicep and torso, with the former leaving a visible bruise.
Have a look at the incident right here:
Pant has been troubled by bouncers in the series, particularly against Pat Cummins. The Australian skipper had dismissed the wicket-keeper with a short-pitched delivery in the pink ball Test in Adelaide.
Rishabh Pant is battling on for Team India in the second session
Amid reports of being lambasted by Gautam Gambhir for the manner of dismissals in the Boxing Day Test, Pant has largely adopted an orthodox method of batting in his ongoing stint at the crease.
As of writing, Pant's gritty knock has resulted in 15 runs off 51 deliveries. Team India are negotiating a very tough phase with the Australian pacers making the most of the good bowling conditions, by not giving much for the batters to work with.
India are placed at 82-4 after 42 overs, midway through the second session. Much like Pant, all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja is also battling on, after being handed a reprieve off Scott Boland's bowling.
