Veteran Australian spinner Nathan Lyon took the final wicket of India in Mohammed Siraj to bowl his side to a 2-1 series lead on Day 5 (Monday, December 30) of the fourth Border-Gavaskar Trophy (2024-25) Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG). The off-spinner trapped Siraj LBW as umpire Michael Gough hardly took time to raise his finger.

The dismissal came in the 80th over of the innings. The premier spinner's off-break spun sharply as the right-hander went back to defend but the ball slid under his bat. Gough raised his finger without hesitation. While Siraj opted for the DRS, ball-tracking showed that it was hitting the leg stump. India were bowled out for 155, losing by 184 runs.

The New South Welshman had earlier dismissed Nitish Kumar Reddy by catching his bat's outside edge, landing a crucial blow. Lyon had got rid of Reddy even in the first innings along with Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar to finish with five scalps in the game.

Meanwhile, the 37-year-old went past Ravichandran Ashwin's tally of 537 scalps in the format by dismissing Siraj, taking his count to 538. Nevertheless, Australia's chief wicket-takers were Pat Cummins and Scott Boland, as they snared three scalps each.

On Day 4, Jasprit Bumrah had pushed the hosts firmly on the back foot with a burst that saw the back of Travis Head, Mitchell Marsh, and Alex Carey, with Australia holding a lead of just over 180. Nevertheless, Cummins (41), Lyon (41), Marnus Labuschagne (70), and Scott Boland (15) launched a stunning rearguard to add over 100 runs to the tally. By Stumps on Day 4, the home side's lead had surged to 333.

Although they added only six more runs on Day 5, it proved to be more than enough to force a comprehensive win.
