Indian cricketer Shubman Gill and former Australia skipper Steve Smith were involved in a verbal spat during the final over of the first session on Day 1 (Friday, January 3) of the fifth Test of the 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT). The game is being played at the Sydney Cricket Ground.
Gill defended the fifth ball of the 25th over of India's first innings from Nathan Lyon. After the delivery, he stepped down the wicket and tapped his bat on the pitch, seemingly taking his time to stretch the over before lunch. Meanwhile, Smith, standing at first slip and visibly annoyed, remarked:
“This is bullsh*t. Oi, let’s play.”
Gill responded to the Australian veteran, saying:
"You take your time Smithy, nobody says anything to you.”
Here’s a video of the moment:
To the disappointment of Indian fans, the 25-year-old was dismissed off the very next delivery. Lyon bowled a slightly short ball that turned and gripped outside off, and as Gill charged down the pitch, he could only manage a thick edge that went straight into Smith’s hands. Gill made 20 off 64 balls, and his dismissal left India at 57-3 after 25 overs.
Shubman Gill once again fails to convert his start into a big innings
Team India won the toss and chose to bat first in the fifth and final Test of the 2024-25 BGT, with Shubman Gill replacing captain Rohit Sharma, who opted out of the match due to concerns over his poor form.
However, Gill couldn't make the most of his opportunity, falling for 20 off 64 balls after failing to convert his start into a significant score.
Earlier in the series, Gill also struggled to make a big score, getting dismissed for 31 and 28 runs in two innings of the second Test in Adelaide. Additionally, he was out for just one in the first innings at Brisbane. Overall, he has accumulated 80 runs across four innings in the series, with an average of 20.
