Australian skipper Pat Cummins called for a DRS review in disagreement with the third umpire's decision on Day 4 of the Boxing Day Test against India in Melbourne. With the hosts desperate to pick up the final wicket and bag a sizable first-innings lead, Cummins seemingly produced a nick off Mohammed Siraj's bat straight into the hands of Steve Smith at second slip.
However, the on-field umpires were unsure about the delivery being a bump ball and took the decision upstairs to the third umpire. The third umpire had barely one look and immediately adjudged it not out, much to Cummins' displeasure.
An unconvinced and frustrated Cummins kept signaling the 'T' to the on-field umpires for a possible review, which the umpires rejected.
Here is a video of the whole drama surrounding the decision:
Fortunately for Cummins and Australia, the decision was not costly as Nathan Lyon dismissed Nitish Kumar Reddy three balls later without any runs being added. It meant India were bowled out for 369, with Australia capturing a valuable 105-run first-innings lead.
"Just two replays" - Ravi Shastri weighs in on the situation
Former Indian head coach Ravi Shastri was surprised by the third umpire having only two looks before making his decision on the potential Mohammed Siraj dismissal.
Meanwhile, former Australian wicket-keeper Adam Gilchrist was amazed by Pat Cummins' decision to attempt to review a decision turned down by the third umpire himself.
"The umpire said I've seen the ball bounce after it hit the bat. That was a very quick call, a very quick call, just two replays," said Shastri on commentary [via TOI].
Gilchrist had his take on the incident and said:
"This is very interesting. I've never seen this before. He is saying, 'You as umpires, took it upstairs on your own behalf, but I want to review the decision.' I do think it needs to be looked at very closely."
Meanwhile, the game itself hangs in the balance. Australia are at 43/2 in their second innings, leading by 148 runs at the time of writing.
