Rishabh Pant impressed with the bat in the second innings against Australia on Day 2 of the fifth Test in Sydney on Saturday, January 4. The left-handed batter smashed a hat-trick of boundaries off Aussie debutant Beau Webster to put pressure back on the opposition after India lost early wickets in the second essay.

The flurry of boundaries came in the 18th over of India’s innings. The 27-year-old pierced the gap between the cover and the point to bring the first boundary off the second delivery. The wicketkeeper-batter then smashed a boundary towards square leg despite losing his balance. He then smacked one towards extra cover to bring three fours in a row.

Rishabh Pant was India’s leading scorer in the first innings. He scored 40 off 98 before the hosts were bundled out for 185. He loves batting in Sydney, having scored 159 not out and 97 during the 2018-19 and 2020-21 tours of Australia.

Rishabh Pant was the chief architect behind India’s 2-1 win during the 2020-21 tour, amassing 274 runs in five innings at an average of 68.50, including two half-centuries. He, however, managed just 194 runs in his eight outings in the ongoing 2024-25 series.

Rishabh Pant’s attacking batting display helped India fight back against Australia during the second innings of the fifth Test. He scored 61 runs off 33 balls, a knock laced with four maximums and six boundaries before getting caught in the slips off Pat Cummins.

At the time of writing, India were 137/6 in 30 overs, with Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar at the crease. The tourists have stretched their lead to 141.

Earlier in the day, Australia were bundled out for 181, trailing by four runs in the first innings. Prasidh Krishna and Mohammed Siraj picked up three wickets apiece for the visitors.

India are trailing the five-game series 2-1. A win in Sydney would help them retain the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. The Aussies are yet to win a Test series against India since the 2014-15 series.
