Australian seamer Scott Boland ended Rishabh Pant's resistance on Day 1 of the fifth and final Test against India at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG). The left-handed batter miscued a pull off the right-arm seamer to perish for 40 off 98 deliveries as the hosts got a breakthrough after a long time.
The dismissal occurred in the 57th over of the innings as the Victorian sent down a rare short-pitched delivery and Pant opted for the pull but mistimed it to mid-on. Aussie captain Pat Cummins was underneath it and took a simple catch to end the 48-run partnership between the keeper-batter and Ravindra Jadeja.
The left-handed batter also failed to convert his starts in the previous Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG). Pant attempted a scoop in the first innings when he was on 28, only to be caught by Nathan Lyon, and went for the pull shot in the second off Travis Head to be dismissed for 30. The pull shot seemingly sparked the visitors' batting collapse as they lost the Test by 184 runs.
Scott Boland had previously dismissed Yashasvi Jaiswal and Virat Kohli
Boland, who has added a new dimension to this Australian attack, dismissed Yashasvi Jaiswal (10) and Virat Kohli (17) earlier in the innings. Mitchell Starc sent KL Rahul packing, while Nathan Lyon removed Shubman Gill in the final ball before lunch.
Earlier, Jasprit Bumrah won the toss and elected to bat first despite the overcast conditions. Bumrah replaced Rohit as captain, while Gill took the regular captain's spot in the line-up. The other change the tourists made was bringing in Prasidh Krishna for the injured Akash Deep. Australia, meanwhile, made only one change from their big win in Melbourne as debutant Beau Webster replaced Mitchell Marsh.
Despite losing the fourth Test, India have a chance to regain the Border-Gavaskar Trophy if they win in Sydney.
