Team India wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant once again gave away his wicket while trying to play a funky shot, putting the team in further trouble. It happened on Day 3 of the fourth Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) 2024-25 Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG).
The visiting side began the day at 164/5 after losing a few key wickets in the final 30 minutes of Day 2. Overnight batter Pant and Ravindra Jadeja looked solid in the first few overs until there was a lapse in concentration for the former.
It all began in the third ball of the 56th over from Scott Boland. The southpaw backed away in the last minute even as Boland delivered the ball. The bowler seemingly looked unhappy and threw a few words at Pant. The batter then tried to counterattack in the next ball with an attempted pick-up lap shot over the fine leg fielder. However, he missed the ball completely only to get hit on his abdomen.
He tried to play another scoop shot in the next ball, only to gift his wicket to the Australian team. It was a pitched-up delivery from Boland and Rishabh Pant wanted to take him on with a scoop shot and only managed to get a top edge. The ball went straight to Nathan Lyon who hardly had to move from the third man region.
The Delhi-born cricketer seemed disappointed with himself, as he had done the hard work by seeing off the bowlers for the first 40-45 minutes of Day 3. With his dismissal, India dropped to 191/6, still trailing by 283 runs.

How has Rishabh Pant performed in BGT 2024-25?
The 27-year-old has been far from his best, to say the least, in the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25. The left-hander has aggregated 124 runs in six innings in the series.
Rishabh Pant has got starts in most of the innings but has failed to convert them into big knocks. He has thrown away his wickets by playing rash shots, which has cost India dearly. With Dhruv Jurel waiting in the wings, the southpaw needs to put a price on his wicket to retain his place in the side.
