With the Mumbai Indians set a lofty 258 to win by the Delhi Capitals at the Arun Jaitley Stadium on Saturday, Rohit Sharma was the first to walk back to the pavilion. Left-arm seamer Khaleel Ahmed struck first blood to remove the veteran batter for only eight off as many deliveries.

The dismissal of Rohit Sharma came in the fourth over of the innings as Rishabh Pant introduced Khaleel Ahmed to bowl his second over. The right-hander wished to clear mid-off but only managed a leading edge as Shai Hope swooped in to take a fairly simple catch. The ex-MI captain had clattered only one boundary at that stage.

Ishan Kishan also departed soon after, nipped out by Mukesh Kumar.

While Rohit started the match as the leading run-getter for the five-time champions, the 36-year-old could not wield his magic in a steep run-chase. The Nagpur-born cricketer, who has captained Mumbai Indians to five titles since 2013, struck his second IPL century against the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) at the Wankhede Stadium earlier this season. However, it resulted in a losing cause.

Meanwhile, the Capitals' charge was led by Jake Fraser-McGurk and Tristan Stubbs after Mumbai Indians skipper Hardik Pandya sent them into bat. Fraser-McGurk, who announced his arrival in IPL 2024 with a half-century against the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), blasted a half-century off only 15 deliveries. Leg-spinner Piyush Chawla managed to break the 114-run opening stand by nipping out Fraser-McGurk for 84 off 27 deliveries.

Abhishek Porel, Shai Hope and Rishabh Pant also did their part before perishing. Tristan Stubbs, who stayed unbeaten on 48, was ruthless against Luke Wood, by playing some outrageous strokes for 26 runs in one over. The final over of the innings sent down by Nuwan Thushara yielded 17 runs.
