Chennai Super Kings (CSK) skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad brought up his second IPL hundred at the Chepauk against the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) on Tuesday. The right-handed batter reached the landmark in the 18th over of the innings with a boundary off Yash Thakur.
The 27-year-old started the over on 93 and slammed the second ball for a maximum. The shot to reach the three-figure mark was driven by the youngster over extra cover comfortably as Thakur sent down a half volley. The Maharashtra-born cricketer raised his bat and helmet in celebration.
Ajinkya Rahane, Daryl Mitchell and Ravindra Jadeja failed to make substantial contributions as Matt Henry, Yash Thakur and Mohsin Khan plucked one each. The partnership of 104 between the CSK skipper and Shivam Dube put the home side in a formidable position.
MS Dhoni hits a last-ball boundary as Ruturaj Gaikwad stays unbeaten at 108
By the time the final over began, the Super Kings were 195-3. Dube plundered a maximum against Marcus Stoinis, followed by another four runs in the next two deliveries. Nevertheless, the left-hander lost his wicket in the very next ball by running himself out.
Gaikwad could manage only a single and gave the strike to MS Dhoni, who hammered a full toss from Stoinis to the mid-wicket boundary. In the process, the Yellow Army set up a target of 211 for the visiting side to win. Matt Henry was the pick of the bowlers for the Super Giants with figures of 4-0-28-1.
The Super Giants have already beaten the defending champions in their last game by eight wickets at the Ekana Stadium. They went into this game unchanged, while the home side dropped Rachin Ravindra to give Daryl Mitchell an opportunity. While Rachin Ravindra made an excellent start to the tournament, the all-rounder's form has dipped in the last few matches.
