While the Australian media is bashing Indian cricket star Virat Kohli for his controversial shoulder barge involving Sam Konstas, the crowd is not holding back either. They, too, have been sledging and abusing the former Indian skipper.
During the second day (Friday, December 27) of the ongoing fourth Border Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) 2024-25 Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG), a section of the crowd was seen using a chant to abuse Virat Kohli from the stands.
The incident appears to have occurred after Yashasvi Jaiswal's horror run-out that involved Virat. The crowd can be heard clapping and chanting:
"Kohli is a wanker."
'Wanker' is a vulgar slang and an inappropriate term, that a section of the MCG crowd used to abuse Kohli, as can be seen in the footage below:
Australian media and crowd continue to go at Virat Kohli
The West Australian newspaper called the Indian veteran 'Clown Kohli' after the first day of the ongoing fourth Test in Melbourne, following his shoulder barge controversy with Sam Konstas.
After the end of play on the second day, the newspaper has taken yet another dig at Virat Kohli, going with the headline - "Clown Kohli's horror day at the MCG." Apart from going at him for the Sam Konstas issue, the newspaper also called Virat out for spoiling Yashasvi Jaiswal's run, referring to the run-out on Day 2.
Former Australian cricketers, such as Ricky Ponting and Mark Waugh also lashed out at the International Cricket Council (ICC) for having let Kohli with just a 20% fine (match fees) and a demerit point.
Further, when Virat was dismissed for 36 on Day 2 and heading to the changing room, another set of Australian fans were seen booing the player, who then came out of the tunnel to respond to the boos.
