Double centurion Shafali Verma bagged her maiden Test wicket during the fourth day of the ongoing India Women vs South Africa Women one-off Test on Monday, July 1. She cleaned up Masbata Klaas to prevent the Proteas from saving the Test match.

Shafali bowled a tossed-up delivery that landed and turned in to hit the stumps. Klaas failed in her defense as the visitors lost their ninth wicket to fall to 357/9 in their second innings.

Earlier on Day 1, Shafali slammed the fastest double century (194 deliveries) in women’s Tests. With that, she became the only Indian after former captain Mithali Raj to reach the milestone.

The right-hander scored 205 runs off 197 balls, hitting eight sixes and 23 boundaries. She also shared a record 292-run partnership with Smriti Mandhana for the opening wicket.

A clinical batting performance, led by Shafali Verma and Smriti Mandhana, followed by an impressive bowling display from Sneh Rana and Deepti Sharma helped India beat South Africa by 10 wickets in one-off Test.

Batting first, India declared at 603-6 in their first innings. Apart from Shafali and Mandhana, Richa Ghosh, Harmanpreet Kaur, and Jemimah Rodrigues chipped in with 86 (90), 69 (115) and 55(94), respectively. Delmi Tucker bagged two wickets for SA.

In response, the Proteas were bundled out for 266 in their first innings. Marizanne Kapp and Sune Luus scored 74 (141) and 65 (164), respectively. Sneh Rana starred with the ball for the hosts, finishing with stunning figures of 8/77, while Deepti Sharma bagged the remaining two wickets.

Made to follow on, the Proteas were bundled out for 373 in their second innings to set a 37-run target on the final day. Captain Laura Wolvaardt led from the front for Proteas, scoring 122 runs, including 16 boundaries. Sune Luus also hit 109, with 18 fours, while Nadine de Klerk chipped in with 61. Sneh Rana, Deepti Sharma, and Rajeshwari Gayakwad picked up two wickets apiece for India.

Chasing 37, Openers Shafali Verma and Shubha Satheesh stayed unbeaten to take the team over the line.
