Former Australia legend Shane Warne's children were present at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) on Day 1 (Thursday, December 26) of the Boxing Day Test against India. The late Aussie great's son and daughter were seen swinging the hat outside the boundary rope, as did almost the 90,000 spectators at the venue, with cricket.com.au uploading the video on social media.
The Victorian died on March 4, 2022, in Thailand following a cardiac arrest, leaving the cricketing fraternity stunned. A massive funeral took place a few days after his demise, attended by some of his former teammates. On Thursday, Cricket Australia continued the tradition of paying tribute to the spin-bowling great every summer, given his contributions to Australian and world cricket.
The spin wizard is currently the second-highest wicket-taker in Tests, claiming 708 scalps in 145 matches, just behind Sri Lanka's Muttiah Muralitharan (800). He was also part of Australia's 1999 World Cup-winning squad and earned the Player of the Match award in the final against Pakistan at Lord's.
Shane Warne took his 700th Test wicket at the Melbourne Cricket Ground
The late cricketer picked up his 700th victim in red-ball international cricket at the iconic MCG by dismissing England opener Andrew Strauss in the fourth Test of the Ashes 2006-07 series. The 145-Test veteran had claimed a fifer in the first innings of that Test, followed by two more in the second, as Australia won by an innings and 99 runs.
The fifth Test in Sydney turned out to be the final one for the leggie along with Glenn McGrath, Justin Langer, and Damien Martyn. The hosts had blanked England 5-0.
Warne's record at the MCG is also outstanding, having taken 56 wickets in 11 Tests at 22.93 with three five-wicket hauls.
Although he retired from international cricket in early 2007, he continued to play for Hampshire until later that year.
