Sydney Thunder all-rounder Sherfane Rutherford scored a boundary on the last ball to seal an emphatic four-wicket Big Bash League (BBL) victory over the Perth Scorchers at the Optus Stadium in Perth on Friday, January 3. With three runs needed off the final ball, the southpaw found the fence with a thick inside edge off Andrew Tye.

David Warner's men thus successfully chased down the target of 178 runs in a nail-biting match. This was the Thunder's fourth victory of this season.

26-year-old Rutherford was adjudged Player of the Match for his heroics with the bat. His unbeaten 19-ball 39-run knock comprised five fours and a six. Here's the Sydney Thunder's winning moment:

Earlier in the day, Sydney Thunder skipper David Warner won the toss and opted to bowl first. Put into bat, Perth managed to score 177-4 in their 20 overs. Opener Finn Allen top scored for them with 68 runs off just 31 balls, which included six fours and five sixes, at a strike rate of 219.35.

Off-spinner Chris Green emerged as the pick of the bowlers for the Thunder, returning with figures of 3/20 in four overs. Despite losing opener Blake Nikitaras with just three on the board, the Thunder got a much-needed 89-run second-wicket partnership between captain David Warner and Matthew Gilkes to set the platform. While Giles made 43 runs off 36 balls, Warner was dismissed for 49 runs off 33 deliveries.

Sydney Thunder are currently placed second in the 2024-25 BBL points table

With four wins out of the five matches in this edition of the Big Bash League, the Sydney Thunder are placed second among eight teams in the points table. They possess eight points and a net run rate of +0.309.

The Thunder's only defeat came up in the Sydney Derby against the Sixers in their second league fixture of BBL season fourteen at the Sydney Showground Stadium. Next up, they will face Brisbane Heat at the Gabba on Monday, January 6.
